Our Alternative: Yacht Transport by Sea
Whenever the delivery of your yacht by sailing it on it own keel is not practicable because of various factors such as the length of the voyage, on-route dangers: a high risk of piracy, orca attacks( a good example is the case when the vessel has to pass through areas such as the Gibraltar strait – very known in the recent years because of numerous orca attacks) or for any other reasons, we can assist you in shipping your yacht by an ocean carrier. This can be done either by using the services of a dedicated yacht carrier vessel or by shipping with an ocean liner as a special cargo.
Because of our experience in the shipping industry, we can provide detailed information about every shipping method, its advantages and disadvantages. We do not work FOR any shipping company, hence we are able to find the best and most advantageous solution for YOU. We are here to provide assistance of any kind and more than happy to share our knowledge and resources. Our honest advice will help you find the most cost-effective way to transport your yacht.

What we provide
How we work
Assessment
The first step of a yacht delivery is establishing contact with the owner or manager and having a conversation in order to gather as much information as possible for the upcoming trip. We will have to know the manufacturer, year of build, engine type and power as well as the overall state of the yacht. There are plenty of details to be discussed in order to make a clear picture, as each of them can have an impact on the overall planning. For example, a particular yacht may require to be sailed on a different route due to its limitations or advantages or we might need to stay closer to the commercial shipping routes in order to be able to increase our chances of receiving assistance in case we need it.
As soon as we receive the required information, we start to plan the voyage accordingly and building up the crew. Depending on the size of the yacht and the length of the trip, we will team up as a minimum a skipper, a first and a second mate, in order to have sufficient people for carrying out watchkeeping duties in a 3 hours on / 6 hours off basis and to comply with the minimum number of hours of rest required for safety. For short passages, the minimum crew will be 2 persons.
It is very important to make an estimation of the desired departure dates, as this will be the starting point for the weather forecast. In order to avoid unnecessary costs for the owner and if our assistance is not necessary, the crew will arrive one day before the estimated departure date. Therefore, the forecast will have to be consulted accordingly and we must be flexible when it comes about timing.
On-scene procedures
Planning
Before proceeding to the delivery of a yacht, we are following several steps which are necessary to correctly estimate the weather conditions which will be encountered on the way and to assess the overall state of the boat. It is highly advisable to hire a mechanic who can have a close look at the boat’s engine prior to preparing it for the delivery, as any underlying problem which the engine might have can cause costly delays and can put both the boat and the crew at risk. We are ready for the unexpected but however, a thourough inspection of the motor can save a lot of money and time.
We are professionals and, as previously mentioned, we put accent on safety. Once the mechanical part is sorted out, we will check the inventory of safety equipment. This is a very important step of the preparation for departure: having a proper kit of safety items can provide peace of mind for the owner as well as for the crew. Sufficient signalling equipment, fire extinguishers, lifejackets, etc are paramount for a safe navigation. Our team will not set sail without the minimum equipment required by the flag state of the vessel. If the particular conditions of the upcoming voyage determine the need of extra items, these will have to be sourced prior to leaving the port.
Checking
Apart from the safety equipment, all the navigational devices available onboard will be tested to make sure they are in good working condition. The availability onboard of nautical charts, publications and tools for navigation will speed things up, however we can normally source any missing items from the departure port or, if informed in advance, we can request from our providers and bring them with us.
After preparing the passage plan we will give an approximate Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) at the destination, so that the owner can have an idea about the date and time when he will have his boat where he needs it. It must be taken into account the fact that, as the name says, this will be just an estimation, as real sea and wind conditions may vary and if a constant speed cannot be maintained, the voyage might be subject to delays especially if the distance to be sailed is long.
To give an example, if the distance from port to port is 1000 nautical miles, a decrease of speed of 1 knot from the estimated one can cause a delay of up to 48 hours(taking into account a decrease from 6 to 5 knots-in the case of sailing yachts). We understand that time is important so we assure that we will do our best to maintain a proper speed or even exceed it.
Monitoring
While the vessel is underway we will constantly monitor the way the vessel is sailing, how the engine is working and many other things. If something will be found defective or not in proper condition, we will try to fix it by all available means. However, in case we cannot do it, everything will be noted down and reported to the boat’s owner as soon as possible or at arrival.
In case there will be any delays we will inform the owner as soon as possible. If the weather conditions get worse during the voyage and the skipper decides that it is necessary to seek shelter in a covered bay or a port, action must be taken for the safety of the crew and the vessel. Otherwise, if everything goes as planned, we will inform the owner regarding the time of arrival at the destination port. After finishing the voyage, the vessel will be cleaned and a debriefing will be carried out, where all the notable aspects of the trip will be discussed.
